(VNN) — Protesters gathered at George Floyd Square in Minneapolis, on Wednesday, after police officer Derek Chauvin was released on bail on Wednesday morning. Chauvin was filmed kneeling on George Floyd’s neck resulting in his death in May.
“Decisions that are made are communicating messages that are our lives, and our voices and our dreams don’t matter,” said Gia Starbrown, pastor at First Covenant Church in Minneapolis. “Hearing of the news today, it also communicates a message to me as an African American woman and so many people of the black community that their voices do not matter.” She added, “If that is not the message that is intended, then we have to change that. We are going to change your actions. We are going to find a way to communicate life, hope, the opportunity for every single individual.”
George Floyd, a 46-year-old African American man, was killed during an arrest in Minneapolis on May 25, after officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes despite Floyd saying he couldn’t breathe.
